The Effects of Smartphone Use on Life Satisfaction in Older Adults£ºThe Mediating Role of Participation in Social Activities

Abstract
Focusing on the effects that information and communication technology (ICT) such as smartphones, have on older adults¡¯ lives in an aging and informatization society, this study examines how smartphone use and participation in social activities in old age affect life satisfaction of older adults. Data on older adults aged 60 and over, who live in Seoul, was collected through a questionnaire survey and 627 cases were analyzed. The influence of smartphone use on participation in social activities and life satisfaction of older adults was tested using a structural equation model, controlling for sex, age, education, marital status, employment status, and income. The results of the analysis showed that the smartphone use of older adults positively affected the levels of participation in social activities and life satisfaction. Moreover, the effects of smartphone use on life satisfaction of older adults was partially mediated by participation in social activities. This suggests that the positive effects of the use of ICT such as smartphones, compositively work to not only directly increase life satisfaction in old age but also indirectly increase life satisfaction by increasing participation in social activities of older adults. The study implies that practical efforts which emphasize enhancing the use of ICT such as smartphones and the level of informatization in old age are needed to increase the participation in social activities and life satisfaction of older adults.
